Steve Clarke's "Sweet Surroundings"|
Released January 21, 2002
Bassist, composer and educator mixes jazz, grooves & odd time signatures on new recording.
Hop-N-Bop Records released SWEET SURROUNDINGS, a new recording from the internationally renowned bassist, composer, educator Steve Clarke on January 21, 2002. Clarke, who debuted his eclectic grooves as a leader in 2000 on KICKIN' IT (01BOP122), wrote all of the compositions, plays bass, keyboards, and provides the drum programming. Clarke has worked with may critically acclaimed musicians including jazz flautist Sherry Winston, pianist and composer Walter Duda on his critically acclaimed CD, DAYLIGHT AGAIN, and recorded 4 CD's & tours Europe with trumpeter Laco Deczi. Clarke has also performed with such R&B innovators as The Coasters, The Drifters, Mary Wells, Sam & Dave, and Ben E. King.
With SWEET SURROUNDINGS, he re-emerges as a leader and continues to expand his musical visions on 10 groove-driven compositions. The CD is an inspired documentation of Clarke's experimentation with form, electronics and one that supports his exciting musical personality. SWEET SURROUNDINGS opens with "Happy Skunk", a kicking, funky five-minute ride that segues into the groove laden "Let's Groove". Clarke takes the gloves off and gives his listeners an inspired funkified performance that is one of the strongest tunes on the set. He changes the tempo and time signature on the beautiful "Eccentric Dancer", a funky 10/4 that illustrates his compositional integrity and ability to tell a musical story and displays his bass as a melodic instrument. Ken Gioffre plays a sultry tenor sax solo bringing the music to a truly transcendent experience. "Frown" takes on the tradition of Clarke's R&B roots and asks you to park any preconceptions at the door while "Another Place in Time" moves freely in 7/4, giving Clarke various musical approaches to arrive at a challenging yet catchy style he can call his own. "Everyday Life" is an upbeat tune that serves as a backdrop for a canvas of improvisational bass impulses with a memorable guitar solo by Jonathan DuBose, Jr.
Taken as a whole, SWEET SURROUNDINGS is by far Steve Clarke's best work to date. It convincingly offers a compelling listen to the next page along his musical journeys.
In addition to his duties as a professional bass player for the past 20 years, Clarke continues to lend his expertise as Adjunct Professor and Bass Instructor at Fairfield University. He is presently on tour with Sherry Winston, the two-time Grammy nominated flautist.
